Message From the President

Vale Graham Hunt

On behalf of members of the Kensington Marryatville I extend condolences to Irene Hunt and family on the passing of Graham this morning following a short illness. Graham was a long-time member of the club joining in 1986- 87. Graham was Pairs Champion in 1998-1999 with Michael Pride and again in 2005 – 2006 with Corey Obst. He was a regular player in the top team as skipper and three.

Week 1 Wrap Up

Week one of the Pennant season is done and dusted. With four teams at home the club was buzzing yesterday both on the greens and in the clubhouse. From my observations it seemed that most people enjoyed the day.

Thank you to the reserve players and Night Owlers who made themselves available to fill the Division 7 team avoiding a possible forfeit. Thank you to Heather Howard for spending the afternoon assisting with the changes in the afternoon tea management.

Yesterday was day one of the new arrangements and we were slammed at the break with 4 teams coming in together. Heather has spent time providing feedback for the committee with suggestions of where further tweaking will be beneficial. Once complete a revised Pennant Day Responsibilities will be posted.

While on the topic of afternoon tea please note that the cost has been reduced from $8 to $5 which covers food, tea and coffee for yourself and your opponent. Dietary requirements have been considered for vegans, vegetarians and celiac. Any other please advise.

Thank you to Paula Butterworth opening the bar and to Tija Lewis and Barbara Towers who came in later to support. All four volunteers did a great job in cleaning the clubhouse including the toilets.

Results

  • Division 3 had a 2 shot win over Henley after a tightly contested match – 77 to 75.
  • Division 4 won comfortably against Prospect Broadview 100 to 64. All rinks were successful.
  • Division 5 the only team playing away was defeated by Walkerville 84 to 59. They came away with 4 valuable points.
  • Division 6 won comfortably against Torrensville 98 to 12. All rinks were well and truly up at the end of the match.
  • Division 7 were defeated by Sturt 72 to 49 however all was not lost they came away with 2 points thanks to our new rink turning a 10-shot deficit into a 2 shot win.

A great start onwards to next week!

World Mental Health Day

October 10 marked World Mental Health Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about mental health issues and advocate for the rights of those facing mental health challenges. This year’s theme was “Mental health is a universal human right”, aimed to improve knowledge and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental well-being. Mental illness is common, with 1 in 5 Australians likely to experience a mental health problem in any given year.

It seemed fitting that the day falls just as we begin competition in earnest. Many players will be nervous and anxious hoping that they play well. These feelings are normal not to be confused with mental health issues. World Mental Health Day promoted me to think more about my comments last week about empathy, compassion and looking after each other. As an educator a significant factor in developing successful relationships with students was getting to know and understand them. What appeared superficially wasn’t always their narrative. The signs and symptoms were subtle, clues behind behaviour often alluded to unmet needs. As for us as club members getting to know each other provides support that not all of us have beyond the club.
